Being a leader is the call of every Christian. But when we take our eyes off Jesus and get distracted, we make our lives difficult and lose calm. Unfortunately, stress is contagious. Fortunately, calm is contagious too—like Jesus when he was sleeping in the boat during the storm.
Talking today about how we’re all called to be leaders. Not just an episode for pastors, or teachers, or parents, but for all Christians.
Gen 1:26-28 “Let us make man in our image…God created them in his own image… God blessed them and said fill the earth and subdue it.”
That’s a call to leadership. Also, in Matt. 28, Jesus says, “all authority has been given to me, therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”
Liz loves those passages because caring for the earth and preaching to all people is too big of a job for one person—she loves how we’re all called to an epic adventure.
Evan wonders if these callings may start to make people feel overwhelmed, could bring up anxiety about not being adequate to do the job.
Matt. 10:37-39 “anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” We’re all called to follow Jesus, and that’s how we’re capable to do anything. Our competency comes from God, not ourselves.
Like walking on the path through snow Jesus has already broken. We still have to walk, but its not nearly as difficult as cutting our own path. We’re supposed to follow.
Life gets more difficult when we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing.
Like kick the cat syndrome: we pass our anxiety along to everyone around us.
Like parenting. We’ve got to stay calm as leaders and keep our eyes on our leader.
Matt. 8 story about Jesus sleeping in the boat during the storm. Jesus asks disciples why they’re afraid and why they have such little faith.
Stress is contagious, but so is calm.
Evan talks about how he likes leaders who share their anxiety/vulnerability. Jesus can do this too, like in the garden when He’s sweating blood.
He has a true view of how stressed to get about these things, and He never casts his cares on his friends, but always casts them on God.
1 Peter 5:6-7 Cast all of your cares on God
On a human level, when we’re in the Holy Spirit, we can be the calm in the midst of the storm. But we’ve got to be connected fully to God for this to work.
