Our need for grace and a savior never changes, no matter how much we change in our spiritual development. The darkness in the way of surrender is pride, independence, & individuality. These three areas are a lie—a mask across reality. Being a light-bearer in the arena of surrender is going to stir up pain. The light we need here is humility, dependence, and vulnerability.
Weakness is where God works. But who wants to surrender?

Unfortunately, pastors are often trained to be islands—isolated from their congregation so it looks like they can thrive without connections.
These three qualities are really a lie—a mask across reality
1 Cor 1:26 “God chose the foolish to shame the wise so that no one may boast before Him.”
Liz talks about coming from a place where she knew her life was wrecked before Christ but is still tempted to look like she’s got everything together.
It’s pride, but it doesn’t feel like pride when you’re doing it, putting on that show.

2 Corinthians 12:7 talks about Paul’s thorn in the flesh; God does not take it away, but instead provided grace in Paul’s weakness
When we boast in our own strength, we’re like ants boasting about lifting a speck of dirt.
The light of surrender and self-inspection is important: humility, dependence, and vulnerability. We need to stay broken down in these areas—not building ourselves back up when no one is looking.
Jesus our example was the suffering servant.
